Grand Cayman has free public walking tracks run by the government's Department of Sports, a public 25m pool at the Lions Aquatic Center in George Town and an Olympic-sized eight-lane running track at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex. The 2026 Walkers Cayman Islands Marathon is on Sunday, 6 December 2026, and national associations cover cycling, triathlon, rugby, cricket, sailing and dozens of other sports.
This guide covers where to run and walk, the marathon, swimming pools and open water, choosing a gym, joining a club, cycling, and exercising in the heat, with clear notes on what to check before you go.
Where are the best places to run in Grand Cayman?
The most dependable places to run or walk, with facilities and hours we could confirm, are the community tracks and sports grounds managed by the Department of Sports. The Department manages 15 sports facilities across Grand Cayman, from West Bay to North Side, and several are open to the public free of charge.
Free public walking tracks
Several Department of Sports walking tracks are free community fitness facilities. You do not need to book them for personal use, and they are open to the public from 5:00pm to 10:00pm:
- John Gray High School Walking Track
- Joanna Clarke Primary Walking Track in Savannah, Bodden Town district
- Gerrard Powell Field in Bodden Town, shared with Theoline McCoy Primary School
The government page does not say whether those evening hours apply every day, so if you are planning a weekend or public holiday session, check with the Department of Sports on (345) 949-7082. If you want to hold an organised event, such as a club training session or a charity walk, it must be booked.
Ronald Forbes Field, North Side
Ronald Forbes Field in North Side has a walking track, a youth-sized grass football field and restrooms. It is open to the public from 7am to 10pm, which makes it one of the few verified public tracks you can use in the morning.
Truman Bodden Sports Complex, George Town
The national stadium in George Town has an Olympic-sized, eight-lane running track, a 110yd x 70yd football pitch and four netball courts, with room for up to 3,000 people. Public opening hours for the track are not listed, so contact the Department of Sports about access and bookings before you turn up.
Haig Bodden Sports Complex, Bodden Town
This complex has a full basketball court, a full netball court and a grass football pitch. The courts are open to the public from 7am to 10pm. The pitch must be booked through the Department of Sports system.

When is the Cayman Islands Marathon in 2026?
The 2026 Walkers Cayman Islands Marathon is on Sunday, 6 December 2026. The event takes place on the first Sunday in December every year and includes a full marathon, a half marathon, a 4-person relay and the Milo Kids Fun Run. The official Cayman Islands Marathon website says 2026 registration is open, and AIMS (the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) lists the same date.
Events and start times
Is the Cayman Islands Marathon a Boston qualifier?
Yes. The full and half marathon courses are AIMS-certified, and the marathon is a Boston Marathon-qualifying event. That makes it a realistic target race for residents training through the autumn, as well as for visiting runners.
How do I register?
You can register online, by mail or email, in person, or at Packet Pick Up. Check the official site for current entry fees, packet pick-up details and course information, as we have not listed those here.
The Kids Fun Run is a nice way to get the whole family involved. For more ideas, see our guide to the best things to do in Cayman with kids.
Is there a public swimming pool in Grand Cayman?
Yes. The Lions Aquatic Center in George Town is a government pool run by the Department of Sports. It has a 25m pool, changing rooms and restrooms, and it is used through the Department of Sports booking system.
The government page does not publish public opening hours, lane-swim times or fees. Ground was broken on the new 50-metre Cayman Islands Aquatic Centre at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on 10 July 2026, and the existing Lions pool is due to be replaced by a new 25-metre Lions pool there, so before you pack your goggles, call the Department of Sports on (345) 949-7082 to confirm the pool's current status, hours and how to book.
When will the new 50-metre pool open?
In early 2024, Radio Cayman reported that the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Heritage had bought a 50-metre pool and a 25-metre pool, which were to be used at the United States Olympic swimming trials in Indiana and then re-installed in Grand Cayman.
In July 2026, Cayman Compass reported that construction was about to start on the long-awaited 50-metre (Olympic-size) pool, called the Cayman Islands Aquatic Centre, which has been approved for construction. Leaders officially broke ground on the centre at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on 10 July 2026. No completion or opening date has been confirmed, so treat any date you hear informally with caution until the government announces one.
Is open water swimming in Cayman safe?
The honest answer is that we have not been able to verify official guidance on lifeguard cover, currents, boat traffic or swim buoys in Grand Cayman, so we are not going to guess. Sea conditions can change, and what suits a confident triathlete may not suit a newer swimmer.
Some practical steps if you want to swim in the sea:
- Ask a national body such as the Cayman Islands Triathlon Association, or a local club, whether they organise group swims, and swim with others rather than alone.
- Tell someone on shore where you are going and when you expect to be back.
- If the water looks rough or you are unsure about conditions, choose the pool instead.
- If you have a health condition, ask your doctor whether open water swimming is suitable for you.
- In an emergency, call 911.
Weather plays a big part in sea conditions. Our guide to Cayman weather month by month explains what to expect through the year.
What should I look for in gyms in Grand Cayman?
There are private gyms and fitness studios on the island, but we have not verified any individually on their own websites, so we are not naming them in this guide. When you compare gyms in Grand Cayman, it helps to visit in person and ask the same questions everywhere:
- Trial or day pass: can you try a session or class before signing up?
- Contract terms: how long is the commitment, what is the notice period, and are there joining or cancellation fees?
- Opening hours: do they fit around your work and the cooler parts of the day?
- Classes and coaching: what qualifications do instructors have, and how big are classes?
- Equipment and cleanliness: is the kit well maintained, and is the space clean?
- Location and parking: a gym near home or work is far easier to stick with.
How much does a gym membership cost in Grand Cayman?
We have not verified current prices, and they vary between providers and membership types. Ask each gym for a written breakdown of every fee, including any joining fee, before you commit.
A government boxing gym with a fitness suite
The Dalmain Ebanks Boxing Gym, a Department of Sports facility, has a fitness suite, a boxing training area and a boxing ring. Use of the gym is arranged through the Cayman Islands Boxing Association.

How do I join a sports club in the Cayman Islands?
The easiest starting point is the Department of Sports' searchable Cayman Islands Sports Directory, which lists sports organisations. Besides its named focus sports, the Ministry funds 40 additional sports, so there is a good chance your sport has a local organisation. Find it in the directory, then contact the association directly about clubs, training times, membership and fees.
National sports organisations we verified
Can I join a rugby, football or cricket team as an adult or expat?
We have not verified eligibility rules, membership fees or season dates on the associations' own websites, including for football. The best approach is to contact the association through the Sports Directory and ask about adult teams, beginner sessions and how to register.
For cricket, note that the Jimmy Powell Cricket Oval, an international-standard ground with a clubhouse, is used only for local league and international matches rather than casual hire.
Booking a facility for your group
If you run a club, team or community group, the public, non-profits and associations can hire Department of Sports facilities through the Department's online platform. For help, call (345) 949-7082.
Is it safe to cycle in Grand Cayman?
We have not been able to verify official road safety guidance or statistics for cyclists and runners in Grand Cayman, so we cannot give a definitive answer here. Your best local contact is Cayman Cycling, the national governing body for the sport. Group ride and membership details were not verified, so ask them directly about organised rides and any advice they share with members.
Sensible general precautions for anyone riding or running on the road include:
- Wear a properly fitted helmet when cycling.
- Use front and rear lights, especially around dawn and dusk.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing so drivers can see you.
- Ride and run predictably, and stay alert rather than wearing both earphones.
- Check current traffic rules with official sources before you head out.
If you are involved in a collision or someone is hurt, call 911.
What is the best time of day to exercise in Cayman's heat?
We have not verified medical guidance on heat and humidity for this guide, so we are not giving specific rules. There are some useful local clues, though. The marathon's full distance starts at 4:30am and the half marathon and relay at 5:00am, well before the heat of the day. The free walking tracks open in the evening, from 5:00pm to 10:00pm, and Ronald Forbes Field in North Side opens at 7am for those who prefer mornings.
If you have a heart, lung or other health condition, are pregnant, or take regular medicines, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before training hard in hot weather. If you or someone with you becomes seriously unwell while exercising, stop and call 911.
